Omega-3 fatty acids are being studied for a wide variety of diseases and conditions. Studies show that fish oil supplements are effective in reducing several cardiovascular disease risk factors and may help with some aspects of rheumatoid arthritis.
Omega-3s appear to be safe for most adults at low-to-moderate doses. However, fish oil supplements may cause minor gastrointestinal upset and at high doses can interact with certain medications, including blood thinners and drugs used for high blood pressure.

Lilian Thompson, PhD, an internationally known flaxseed researcher from the University of Toronto, says she wouldn’t call any of the health benefits of flax "conclusively established," but research indicates that flax may reduce risks of certain cancers as well as cardiovascular and lung disease.
Recent studies have also suggested that flaxseed may have a protective effect against breast cancer, prostrate cancer, and colon cancer. At least two of the components in flaxseed seem to contribute, says Kelley C. Fitzpatrick, director of health and nutrition with the Flax Council of Canada

Part of the benefit appears related to its synergistic effect on calcium to help regulate electrical impulses and prevent calcium from depositing in soft tissues.
