The Foxtrot became very popular during the 1940s. Indeed it was so popular that the dance floors were so crowded that it was virtually impossible to dance the travelling style of the Foxtrot!

So it became important to create a version of the dance that could almost be danced "on the spot". This on the spot dance took easy repeatable basic steps, which for beginners could be learnt quickly (2 walks forward, side close, 2 walks back, side close and repeat). So the on the spot dance which became appropriately known as crush dancing, became rhythm dancing and then the social foxtrot.
Despite being called a Foxtrot, the steps are designed to be enjoyed to a wide variety of rhythms, indeed almost any music with a 2/4 beat or 4/4 beat which only precludes the Waltz. There are only a few variations to this dance but for many it is easy to learn, easy to dance and useable to most types of music, including modern music.
